When looking at Fox 8 news the other night, an interesting topic came across the tv screen: Should Women Rule the World. In trhis news segment the question was directed towards President Obama asking if he would be better off if his wife Michelle had his job. This interview was done by Dee Dee Myers, a woman who was Press Secretary for President Clinton back in 1994. The fact was that women shouldn't never run the world period, but run along beside men because women have different lifestyles and and perspectives on issues. In fact each gender has things that they are good at that will compliment the other. But according to the Femininist Movement, there was a thought that men and women were engaged in a zero sum game, and that for one gender to get something, the other had to lose it. Just the same as for parents taking care of children, the child gets a different perspective from each parent and when there is someone there to see the opportunity, it sometimes is a better result in the end. So by increasing women's roles politically might lessen the effects of all the wars take place. To me this just shows that womens subordinate position in society can bring out some good qualities and sometimes having a women's point of view will help to enhance and articlate any situation.
Great observation about the zero-sum game... Men may have 'ruled the world' for a long time, but I don't think we need a change in the sex of the rulers, but a change in perspective.
ReplyDeleteI also think there's a huge difference between leading and ruling.... perhaps if we began to think about changing that concept we could lead the world as partners!
Finally, it's pretty 'essentialist' to think that women would be different leaders just because they are women.......
I agree a change in perspective would be good because it doesn't take a man's idea to cause a force of movement but i guess since the man is suppose to be the dominant force and essentally many women often look up to as a power source.
